National Identification Authority (NIA)

The National Identification Authority (NIA) is the statutory body in Ghana responsible for creating and managing the national identity system, including the issuance of the Ghana Card.

Mandate

Deliver exceptional identity services through a digital ecosystem to promote safety, security and good governance.

Core Activities & Services

  • First-Time Registration: capturing biometric data and issuing Ghana Cards.
  • Card Issuance: distributing printed Ghana Cards to successful applicants.
  • Data Updates: allowing individuals to update personal information in the National Identity Register.
  • Card Replacement: processing replacements for lost, stolen or damaged Ghana Cards.
  • Identity Verification: assisting institutions with authenticating identity against the NIS database.
  • Data Harmonization: integrating other state ID documents to harmonize citizen data.
